  『金萱』坊間習稱『27仔』,經過四十三年的選育後,才在民國七十年命名德的新品種,由於所製造的包種茶具有獨特的香味,其後由吳振鐸老師按其特色命名『金萱』,因為廣受消費者的喜好,加上其中早生,強健,高產且適合機採的特性,因此種植面積在穩金萱為茶改場自烏龍配種培育而成,台茶十二號樹型較大,屬於稍具直立性的橫張型,芽密度高,幼芽大,綠中帶紫,洱毛密度略少於青心烏龍,但製造時較不易脫落,故成茶上可看到明顯的洱毛。

  葉片大型呈橢圓型,葉緣鋸齒較疏,葉肉稍厚,濃綠且富光澤。由於樹勢強健,環境適應力強,高產,品質佳且廣受消費者歡迎,因此全省各茶區均有種植。

  金萱最著名的特色即是其獨特的奶香味,湯色金黃,茶性柔和,適合女性及初學者飲用,多製成半球狀,其奶香味常伴隨著海拔高度的上升而更顯純撲自然。

  竹山鎮山坪頂茶區早期推廣以臺茶 12 號、臺茶 13 號為主,因其產量高、管理容易、產製技術純熟,且其部份茶園所產製之茶菁,外售至山下大型茶工廠製造,茶農收益穩定,且其屬山坡地,更新不易,至今仍保持以該品種為大宗。茶菁採摘以手採為主,產製茶類為半球形部分發酵茶,因其海拔約略 400-600 公尺,故其製茶發酵度較高,茶湯滋味濃稠度較足。夏季亦利用臺茶 12 號等茶菁產製小葉種紅茶,紅茶成品茶湯滋味濃稠感佳。
